Nature as Artifice
Wednesday 1 April, 5.30–7.30pm
Narryna, 103 Hampden Road Battery Point
This exhibition, curated by Dr Llewellyn Negrin, features the work of artists Christl Berg, Janine Combes, Chantale Delrue, Jan Dineen, Linda Erceg, Ruth Frost, Denise Rathbone, Jane Slade and Frances Watson, and explores the ways colonial women observed, collected and interpreted the natural world of early Tasmania as manifested in their sketchbooks, botanical illustrations, albums and collections of specimens, as well as in the decoration of their homes and themselves.
In doing so, it considers whether there is a different story of Tasmania’s colonial past to be told through the lens of these women than that conveyed in the landscape paintings of male artists such as John Glover and John Skinner Prout, and how this may shed light on current day environmental concerns.
Come along to this special event to hear from Dr Negrin and the artists, and explore the exhibition in their company.
Members $38, Non members $43 including refreshments
